Abstract Relief of residual stresses in 2024 aluminum alloy bars developed by quenching in hot water (68℃) from a solution treating temperature of about 490℃ has been studied. Various combinations of solution treatment, uphill quench, T-6 and T-4 aging treatments have been examined to find out a optimum relief condition. A new method of uphill quench has been developed, which uses boiling trichloroethylene instead of conventional high pressure vapor. The best result, in which 80% of the residual stress was relieved, has been obtained when solution treated specimen was immediately uphill quenched to boiling trichloroethylene, followed by T-6 aging. Plastic stretching :as a method of stress relief has also been studied.
