Abstract The moving-heat source method was applied to investigate the radial temperature gradient and the cooling rate on metal surface by the irradiation of a high-energy pulsed laser. In order to calculate those values the data obtained by irradiation of a Q-switched ruby laser on pure Sn in vacuum were used. The results showed that the temperature gradient near the crater was approximately 2.3×10^6 ℃/㎝ and the cooling rate was about 7×10^9 ℃/sec. When they were compared with other kind of investigation, similar results were obtained.
