Abstract In Fe-Zr system, phase transformation during mechanical alloying and grinding have been studied. A mixed structure of amorphous phase and nanocrystalline phase was obtained by mechanical alloying of Fe and Zr elemental powders in a conventional ball mill for about 80-120hs. Further alloying processing results in partial crystallization of amorphous phase into Φ-Zr₂Fe and α-Fe. Mechanical grinding of Fe∼Zr alloy powders which were annealed for crystallization and relaxation shows no drastical structural changes. Amorphization during mechanical alloying of Fe and Zr powders occurred through interdiffusion process between the two layers of Fe and Zr rather than structural instability. Selected area electron diffraction pattern from the amorphous phase shoars two diffuse hallow ring patterns including some spots, indicating that phase separation occurs into Fe rich amorphous phase and Zr rich amorphous phase and some nanoscale crystalline.
