Abstract In conventional ion chromatographical separation of the rare earths it is customary that the mixed elements are adsorbed first to the ionic exchange resin phase and then eluted by complexing agent for separation of individual elements. This paper describes a novel method in which complexed solution of R.E. by HEDTA is directly fed in the adsorption stage. The distribution of the R.E. on the resin bed in the column was calculated from the data available. The result with three elements Sm(III), Nd(III), Pr(III) showed that the distribution in the column was in the adverse order from top of the resin bed. This was varified by the experiment. The experimental result proved to be advantageous to the conventional method, In the 40% of adsorption band, R.E.`s were partilly separated and hence the length of displacement column can be shortened. This enables the operation to be faster with lesser reagent.
