Abstract Deformation behavior during axisymmetric upsetting of sintered metals has been simulated using the finite element method. In powder forging process, the initial density distribution is not homogeneous. For the accurate analysis of compression test as well as powder forging process, the effects of initial density distribution and die friction on density distribution during deformation have been studied. Under a low friction initial density distribution affected deformation geometry, strain distribution and density distribution. But under a high friction no effect of initial inhomogeneous density distribution was found. Initial density distribution did not affect punch force and average density regardless of friction condition.
